A Foodie's Guide to the Nation's Capital

Washington, D.C. is a melting pot of cultures, ideas and influence-right down to the city's food. From timeless American institutions to exotic ethnic food, foodies traveling in the district will find it hard to be bored with the city's selection of culinary triumphs.

THE TRADITIONALISTS

With a blend of old-world charm, and modern boutiques and eateries, Georgetown is a favorite for area visitors. Situated along the waterfront, Georgetown's cobblestoned streets are home to numerous restaurants, bars and cafes. Fall, spring and summer are ideal for grabbing brunch along the waterfront or on a quaint side street at one of Georgetown's numerous cafes.

For lunch and dinner, head to the downtown area of Washington, D.C. in to the northwest quarter, where you'll find BLT Steak. Near the White House and Capitol Building, this restaurant presents guests with their own interpretation of the modern American steakhouse. Traditionalists will love the eatery's juicy cuts of beef and classic menu created by the talented Executive Chef, Victor Albisu.

One of the city's staple restaurants and landmarks is the Old Ebbitt Grill. This award-winning restaurant and bar is adjacent to The White House and museums of downtown Washington. Established in 1856, Ebbitt Grill is known as the favorite meeting place of Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Harding and Theodore Roosevelt. The restaurant's beaux-arts façade, mahogany interior and marble bars are highlighted by game trophies of Teddy Roosevelt himself. Diners shouldn't miss the restaurant's Oyster Bar, and lengthy menu of American classics.

MODERN & CONTEMPORARY EATERIES

Some of the city's restaurants are made nationally famous by the celebrity chefs who run them. If you're looking for something that will really wow your senses, try Rogue 24. Serving one of the most unique dining experiences in D.C., this restaurant features an interactive culinary experience where the kitchen is center stage and diners experience a progression of 16 to 24 courses created by James Beard Foundation award-winning Chef RJ Cooper.

For the ultimate in exclusivity, there is Komi. Serving a fixed multi-course dinner for $135 per person, diners begin with a series of mezzethakia - small, light dishes - and progress to heartier flavors, including their acclaimed pasta, family-style entrées, followed by desserts. Although there are no printed menus, you will find yourself in excellent hands at Komi.

The brain-children of highly lauded Executive Chef Jose Andres, Zaytinya - an innovative Turkish, Green and Lebanese restaurant and bar, and Jaleo - the Spanish tapas eatery, are always buzzing with amazing food and drink. Granville Moore's, a gastro pub featuring moules - frites, has been made famous due to its historically delicious food and recognition from Travel + Leisure, Rachel Ray and Food Network Star, Bobby Flay. For something a little more exotic, head to U Street's Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant.

Along with these favorites, visitors can always find a seat at the city's other numerous cafes, chain restaurants and food trucks. Welcome to the Nation's capital-we hope you brought your appetite!
